Just 20 miles north of Atlanta and located on Georgia Highway 53 between the neighboring towns of Tate and Talking Rock, Jasper is a terrific place to call home. Jasper was named after a hero of the American Revolution, William Jasper, who served valiantly before being killed in the battle of Savannah, and patriotic roots still run deep here. Jasper continues to attract history buffs interested in the marble courthouse in Jasper that was built in 1890, and where Pickens County residents gathered to raise a Union Flag in protest of Georgia’s secession from the Union. Jasper has restored its jail, built in 1906 of the same marble that is Pickens County major resource, and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Jasper celebrates its history as a marble resource during the first weekend in October, when fall’s colors are splashed along the mountains, during the Georgia Marble Festival. Visitors and residents of Jasper tour large pit marble quarries, observe as talented sculptors turn raw marble into defined art, and mountain music weaves its way to the ears of those enjoying other crafts and entertainment options. Summer months in Jasper are not so hot that you can’t enjoy local golf courses, city parks or enjoying a glass of cold iced tea on the front porch. Spring ushers in the bloom of dogwood, mountain laurel and lush green trees that have inspired Jasper to become a Tree City USA. Winters are mild, and it rarely snows so much as to prevent travel, but enough to make Jasper beautiful.
